GUIDE TO SURGICAL TRAINING -
INTRODUCTION
The College of Surgeons of Hong Kong has a
community responsibility to act as an authoritative body for the purpose of
providing quality training for surgeons in Hong
Kong and to ensure by examination that required standards
have been attained.
The Council of the College, advised by the Education Subcommittee, defines
the surgical training requirements towards the completion of higher surgical
training. Basic trainee surgeons who have completed the prescribed period of
training in approved programmes and have passed the intermediate examinations
may be accepted by the Council as Ordinary Members of the College of Surgeons of Hong
Kong. Membership of the College is an entrance for higher
surgical training. The object of surgical training is to produce a specialist
in surgery, i.e. a fully trained surgeons in his chosen specialty. On
completion of the necessary period of higher surgical training and passing
the exit examination, trainee surgeons would be elected fellows of the
College and recommended for fellowship of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine.
The attained qualification entitles the holder to be included in the
specialist register of the Hong Kong Medical Council.
This Guidebook sets out the rules and guidelines applied by the Council of
the College in defining the surgical training requirements for the completion
of higher surgical training. These rules and guidelines may be amended from
time to time by resolution of the Council of the College. The Council of the
College shall be the sole authority for the interpretation of such rules and
guidelines whose decision upon any question of interpretation shall be final
and binding.
